Lesson 1

We will revise a sample unelaborated response to practice thorough analysis and elaboration, effective connection among ideas, and effective and correct integration of quotations.

Activity 1: Read – Discuss – Write

We will revise an unelaborated response to the section 3 diagnostic to form a clear and strong claim.

Read the Unelaborated Response Handout. With a partner, discuss the following questions:

  1. What theme is being analyzed?

  2. Does the response thoroughly and accurately explain the theme?

As a class, revise the first sentence of the sample response to form a clear and strong claim.

Activity 2: Read – Discuss – Write

We will revise the unelaborated response to include strong textual evidence.

Reread the sample unelaborated response.

With a partner, discuss the following questions:

  1. Are the quotations relevant to the claim?

  2. What other quotations might provide stronger evidence?

As a class, revise the response, choosing at least three strong pieces of textual evidence that support the selected theme. Use your Text-Theme Note-Taking Tool to assist you in finding the textual evidence.

Activity 3: Read – Discuss – Write

We will revise an unelaborated response to thoroughly explain the significance of the textual evidence and to make clear connections among ideas.

Reread the sample unelaborated response.

With a partner, discuss the following questions:

  1. Are the ideas thoroughly elaborated on?

  2. How are the ideas connected?

As a class, revise the response so it analyzes the significance of the textual evidence and makes connections among the ideas.

Activity 4: Read – Discuss – Write

We will revise the response to include effective integration and proper citation of quotations.

Reread the sample unelaborated response.

With a partner, discuss the following question:

  1. How does the model integrate quotations from the play? Does it use proper conventions?

As a class, revise the unelaborated response to include effective integration of quotations and proper citations.
