Lesson 12

We will each draft a one-page literary analysis of our vignettes, defending the effectiveness of our narrative choices. We will also submit our narrative outlines, draft vignettes, and annotated bibliographies.

Lesson Goals

Speaking and Listening

  • Analyze Relationships: How well do I recognize and interpret important relationships among key details and ideas (characters, setting, tone, point of view, structure, development, etc.) within texts?
  • Attend to Details: How well do I recognize and interpret language and sentence structures to deepen my understanding of texts?

Activity 1: Write

We will draft a one-page critical literary analysis of our vignettes, defending the effectiveness of our narrative choices.

Draft a one-page critical literary analysis of your vignette, defending the effectiveness of your narrative choices.

Respond to the following questions in your analysis of your work:

  1. How well did I write a narrative vignette to develop an imagined experience to highlight a contemporary issue, using effective technique and well-chosen details?

  2. How well did I incorporate research in my vignette to create a more plausible and vivid imagined world for my reader?

Be sure to do the following:

  • clearly state your intended goals

  • explain how your narrative choices advance those goals

  • provide details from the vignette that support your explanation

Submit your critical analysis, vignette, and annotated bibliography to your teacher.

Activity 2: Read – Write

We will reflect on our work on the Section Diagnostic and assess how prepared we are for the Culminating Task.

Step 1

Choose at least three of the questions below and respond to them in your Learning Log:

  1. How well did you take necessary action to prepare for the task?

  2. What went well for you during the completion of this task?

Review the Central Question of the unit:

How can stories send messages to societies?

Use the following questions to guide a discussion with a partner or small group:

  1. What new knowledge do you have in relation to the Central Question?

  2. What are you still curious about in relation to the Central Question?

  3. What is the relationship between the question and the texts you have read so far? How do the texts shed light on the question? How does the question help you understand the texts?

  4. How has your response to the question evolved, deepened, or changed?

In your Learning Log, write your response to Question 3. You will return to this response in later lessons to examine how your understanding of the Central Question has evolved.
