Section 3: Overview
Sending Messages
We will read Part 2 of 1984 and explore the following questions: What message is Orwell sending to a wide audience of readers in 1984? How effective is his writing in sending that message? We will also begin planning for our narrative story by drafting a vignette that emulates the narrative techniques we have studied in the novel.
Lesson 1:
We will use feedback from our teacher and peers to make revisions to our Section 2 Diagnostic to improve our research and presentation skills.
Lesson 2:
We will preview the Section 3 Diagnostic and the literature circle protocol for reading Part 2 of 1984.
Lesson 3:
We will meet with our literature circles to discuss Chapter 1 from Part 2 of 1984. We will also begin brainstorming ideas for a narrative story.
Lesson 4:
We will discuss Chapter 2 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circle and examine Orwell’s use of imagery. We will begin planning our narrative vignette.
Lesson 5:
We will discuss Chapter 3 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circle and examine Orwell’s use of suspense. We will continue working on the components of our Section 3 Diagnostics.
Lesson 6:
We will discuss Chapter 4 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circle and examine Orwell’s use of inner monologue to develop character. We will continue working on the components of our Section 3 Diagnostic.
Lesson 7:
We will discuss Chapters 5–6 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circle and examine Orwell’s use of understatement. We will continue working on the steps of our Section 3 Diagnostic.
Lesson 8:
We will discuss Chapters 7–8 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circle and examine Orwell’s use of foreshadowing and mystery. We will continue working on the components of the Section 3 Diagnostic.
Lesson 9:
We will discuss Chapter 9 from Part 2 of 1984 with our literature circles and examine Orwell’s strategic word choice. We will continue working on the components of our Section 3 Diagnostic.
Lesson 10:
We will discuss Chapter 10 from Part 2 of 1984 as a class, and we will prepare to receive peer feedback in the next lesson.
Lesson 11:
We will work with partners to obtain and provide feedback on our narrative vignettes.
Lesson 12:
We will each draft a one-page literary analysis of our vignettes, defending the effectiveness of our narrative choices. We will also submit our narrative outlines, draft vignettes, and annotated bibliographies.
Lesson 13:
We will review feedback on the Section Diagnostic. We will use the feedback to make revisions to our work.
Lesson 14:
We will share the understanding we have gained through our independent reading and continue to read our texts.
