Section 5: Overview

Culminating Task

We will use our research and toolkit of writing strategies to write narrative stories that send messages to society about contemporary issues. In addition, we will each conduct a brief literary analysis of our own work, defending the effectiveness of our narrative choices.

  • Lesson 1:

We will generate three open-ended, thought-provoking questions related to ideas in the novel 1984, and we will respond to each.

  • Lesson 2:

We will examine the Narratives Reference Guide to understand plot structure and map the narrative sequence of 1984.

  • Lesson 3:

We will refine our understanding of the narrative sequence of 1984 and will map the sequence for our narrative.

  • Lesson 4:

We will get peer feedback on our story map and plan. We will begin drafting our narrative story.

  • Lesson 5:

We will review our draft and make revisions to craft and style to strengthen the effectiveness of our narrative techniques.

  • Lesson 6:

We will work with partners to obtain and offer feedback on our narrative stories. We will use the feedback to revise our narratives.

  • Lesson 7:

We will make final edits to our narrative story and organize our writing portfolio.

  • Lesson 8:

We will write a literary analysis of our own work and submit our writing portfolios.

  • Lesson 9:

We will finish the unit by engaging in a whole-class discussion about 1984. We will also discuss the writing process for the Culminating Task and identify possible pathways to explore for the Application Unit.

  • Lesson 10:

In a culminating activity, we share the knowledge we have gained and the connections we have made by reading our independent reading texts.
