Activity 1: Read – Discuss – Write

We will revise our group’s narrative sequence map of 1984 based on feedback from our peers.

Return to your group’s original chart paper containing the narrative sequence for 1984. Examine the feedback. Revise or refine your map for 1984 based on the feedback.

Activity 2: Read – Write

We will map the organization of our narrative stories.

In Section 3, you conducted research to write a narrative that sends a powerful message to society, and you used that research to write a vignette that captured a single moment or a defining detail about an element of your story. In Section 4, you used your research and vignette to design an outline for your narrative story. You will now build on that outline to map the narrative sequence of your entire narrative.

Review the Culminating Task Checklist. Pay attention to the criteria in the first part of the task. Use the criteria on the checklist and what you have learned over the course of the unit and what you have brainstormed with peers to map the narrative sequence of your narrative. Include the archetypal narrative arc that your story follows.

For homework, we will finalize our narrative sequence and plan.

For homework, finalize your story’s narrative sequence and outline. Your outline should include specific details on the following elements:

  • setting location (Your story can take place in multiple settings.)

  • setting timeframe (Your story can take place in multiple timeframes. You might choose to use flashbacks or flash-forwards.)

  • characters (You might choose to include one or many characters.)

  • point of view (You might choose to have multiple first-person narrators.)

  • mood

  • theme (The underlying message to society must be expressed as a complete statement.)
