Lesson 13

We will prepare for our Section Diagnostic by considering the following question: Why is it important to have policies and processes that address ethical and privacy- and security-related implications of artificial intelligence? We will unpack the prompt, review the primary source, form claims, and gather evidence.

Lesson Goals

  • Can I gather and organize relevant and sufficient evidence to demonstrate an understanding of texts and topics, support claims, and develop ideas?

Activity 1: Read – Write – Discuss

We will prepare to write by previewing the task, unpacking the prompt, and reviewing the section 1 diagnostic checklist.

Read the Section 1 Diagnostic Checklist.

To unpack the prompt, work with an elbow partner to do the following:

  • Read and annotate the Section Diagnostic question, paying close attention to the types of implications.

  • Discuss what you have learned about the meaning of the words ethical, privacy, and security in relation to AI.

  • Underline words or phrases in the steps of the task outline that help you understand the purpose of this task.

  • Share with your elbow partner the words you underlined and explain what you believe the prompt is asking of you.

  • Share with the class your understanding of the question and prompt.

Read the list that describes what should be included in the explanation of your claim.

  • Discuss with your elbow partner what you must do to succeed on this assessment task.

  • Share with the class your understanding of the tasks’ expectations, goals, and checklist.

Activity 2: Read – Write

We will review section 3 of “Artificial Intelligence And Life In 2030,” identifying and summarizing the key claims, recommendations, and supporting evidence.

Individually, reread the final paragraph of the Guidelines for the Future conclusion in Section 3 of "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030."

Locate the sentence from which the diagnostic question comes. Paraphrase this sentence in your own words, as a summary of the final claim made in the report about AI policies.

Study the claims that lead up to the final conclusion.

  • Use the text formatting cues to identify the seven claims made in Section 3 that may be related to the final conclusion.

  • Determine which of the claims you see as key ideas related to AI policy, as claims that address the three policy recommendations.

  • Paraphrase the claims you see as most important and relevant.

  • Identify and paraphrase the three general policy recommendations presented in Section 3 of the report.

Reread your paraphrases of the claims and recommendations found in Section 3.

Write a claim that summarizes what the report is saying about policies and processes that address the ethical and privacy- and security-related implications of artificial intelligence.

Activity 3: Read – Write

We will form our own position and claim in response to the Section Diagnostic question.

Reread your summary claim about what the report says regarding AI policies and practices.

Based on what you have learned so far in the unit, and your analysis of the research study, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Why is it important to have policies and processes regarding artificial intelligence?

  2. Why, in particular, do AI policies need to address issues of ethics, privacy, and security?

Form a new claim that expresses your response to these questions and is connected to the ideas of "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030." Review your claim to see if you are responding to the diagnostic question effectively.

Activity 4: Read – Discuss

We will organize our claims and evidence in response to the Section Diagnostic question and prompt.

Review the annotations, notes, and claims you have developed previously regarding "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030" as well as other material from the unit. Identify additional sources you might use to support your claim about the importance of AI policies and any claims you have identified or formed for that source.

With a partner, share your claim and discuss how it responds to the diagnostic question.

Share and discuss ideas about possible sources and evidence that support your claims. Refer to the work you and other students did in the previous lesson regarding Section 3 of "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030," as well as other unit material. Gather the evidence you will use to develop your response. Use the Organizing Evidence Tool to guide your thinking.

For homework, continue preparing for the Section Diagnostic.
